Venice to Rome by Bike: Preparations
This trip has evolved since I first began planning it. At first I was trying to recruit friends, “riding buddies” to go with me… many hopefuls, but none could join. Next I tried to get a guide to drive and one to ride with me who already lives in the area of Italy where I am going, but a couple months before the trip would begin, they realized they have cycling races, and can’t help me. Then I thought, at least I will get someone to “drive the course” for me before I get there to make sure it all makes sense. That also did not come to pass, but I am undaunted. Therefore my current plan is to map the route via a multitude of paper maps, on-line Google Earth, and online maps. Having great uncertainty of the course, I have just ordered the latest GPS navigation system from the Touring Club of Italy. Seeing the twists and turns this trip has already taken while I am yet in Pittsburgh, I thought I would begin my trip “diary” right now.

Well, I just finished planning each daily ride. It was painfully
slow. Much to my dismay, the most detailed maps available for Italy
do NOT provide any street names outside of major highways. I have no
idea how the Italian guides do this planning unless they ride every
single route first (which is what I would do of course if I were in
Italy). I have also programmed (as nearly as I can tell) each course
into the GPS – even though the same exact roads have different names
between the Google Maps and my Touring Club of Italy GPS device.
This is bound to be an “adventure of discovery”.

Questo giro si e’ evoluto da quando ho iniziato a programmarlo. Al inizio, stavo provando a reclutare gli amici, “amici di corsa” per andare con me… con molta speranza, ma nessuno poteva accompagnarmi. Poi ho provato a trovare una guida per guidare e uno per correre con me che gia abitasse nell’area dove vado, ma due mesi prima che il giro cominci, hanno realizzato che loro avranno le gare di ciclismo, e non potranno aiutarmi. Poi ho pensato, almeno prendero’ qualcuno per provare il percorso prima del mio arrivo, per rendere tutto sicuro. Anche questo non e’ successo, ma sono impavido. Dunque, il mio programma corrente e’ di programmare il tragitto tra molte mappe cartacee, Google Earth in linea, e le cartine in linea. Avendo grande incertezza del percorso, ho appena ordinato l’ultimo sistema di navigazione GPS del Touring Club d’Italia. Vedendo tante curve che questo viaggio ha gia preso, mentre sono ancora in Pittsburgh, ho pensato di cominciare di scrivere il mio diario di viaggio proprio adesso.

Allora, ho appena finito di programmare ogni giro quotidiano. E’ stato dolorosamente lento. Purtroppo le cartine più dettagliate disponibili per l’Italia non forniscono i nomi delle strade secondarie ad eccezione delle autostrade. Non ho idea di come le guide italiane facciano i programmi senza percorrere prima ogni singolo percorso (questo è ciò che io dovrei fare naturalmente se fossi in Italia). Ho anche programmato ( più vicino di quanto possa sapere ) ogni percorso nel GPS - anche se le stesse strade hanno nomi differenti tra Google Mappe e il mio dispositivo GPS del Touring Club d’Italia . Questa dovrebbe essere l’ “avventura della scoperta”
